Typical Maintenance Requirements
UV lamps (bulbs) require annual replacement to ensure optimal performance. UV lamp performance, just like any other light source, will slowly diminish over time. Beyond one year, there is no assurance that the UV light emitted from the bulb will provide sufficient disinfection. Remember, UV light cannot be seen. The bulb may still produce light, but not necessarily UV rays. The quartz sleeve does not need replacement unless it gets broken, however, it should be cleaned several times per year (outside only).

UV Applications
Well Water
Many rural homeowners who draw their water from private wells assume that their water is safe. Unless the water has been tested, however, there is no way to know whether it contains potentially harmful pathogens. A coliform count indicates that a well is contaminated. Faulty sewage or manure systems or field run-off can be sources of the contamination.
Many livestock producers wish to protect their animals from poor water quality and install water treatment systems that incorporate UV for disinfection.
Surface Water
In many rural regions, homes and cottages draw their water directly from lakes or streams, which collect potentially harmful storm run-off. Add that many animals live in these lakes and streams, and the likelihood of microbial contamination in these supplies is high. Again, the water can be tested, and a coliform count will indicate whether the water should be disinfected.
As with any water supply, the level of contamination can vary throughout the seasons. Water is most likely to be contaminated with microorganisms during rainy season when levels are high and run-off peaks. Consequently, the rainy season is an ideal time to test your water.
Testing private water supplies is typically necessary before selling a rural home. But often only then do water contamination problems become known. If a problem does exist, vendors must often prove that the water is safe before the prospective buyers will take ownership. Installing an ultraviolet water disinfection system is an effective, straightforward way to solve these types of water contamination problems.
Public Water Supplies
Even people in communities served by municipally treated water are installing UV systems. Concerns over the health affects of chlorine have prompted many families to de-chlorinate their water. Some of these families use UV systems to disinfect their de-chlorinated water. Others install UV systems to back up the municipal treatment process.
Commercial Water
Restaurants, hotels, resorts, and campgrounds must supply safe water to their guests. Many of these establishments now employ UV disinfection systems because they are simpler and easier to handle than chlorination systems.
As well, the sick and elderly are more susceptible to waterborne pathogens than are the young and healthy. Consequently, hospitals and nursing homes must keep their water free from microbial contamination. The medical industry also incorporates UV into essential processes such as dialysis.
Process Water for Industry
Factories and laboratories with low water use but high quality requirements can take advantage of UV disinfection systems to treat their water. Some processes are unable to tolerate chlorine, and the food and beverage industry wants to eliminate the odour and taste of chlorine from their products.

How Ultraviolet Disinfection System Works
As water flows past the UV lamp(s) in a UV disinfection system, microorganisms are exposed to Ultraviolet light energy. Ultraviolet light alters the DNA material in cells so that bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms can no longer reproduce. The microorganisms are considered dead, and the risk of disease from them is eliminated. These Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems are designed for commercial & industrial applications. The process of UV Disinfection is accomplished without adding any harmful chemicals to your drinking water and does not distort the water or effect its pH value. UV Disinfection has an effective kill rate of 99.99% of most living microorganisms such as bacteria & viruses.

Ultraviolet Light Disinfection UV Sterilizer Water Treatment Systems

In which types of systems should UV sterilizers be used and what are the benefits?
A UV sterilizer may be used in any aquarium, however, in smaller aquariums (less than 24 gallons), the cost of the unit may make it impractical. UV sterilizers are most helpful in multiple tank systems that share a common filter. In a single tank system, they are beneficial in controlling the spread of an infectious disease if one occurs. This is especially true in heavily stocked tanks and those with large amounts of live rock and corals that could make catching and isolating a diseased fish difficult, or the use of certain medications contraindicated. Disease control is especially important when adding new fish to an established aquarium, since 98% of the hobbyists do not use a quarantine aquarium.
In ponds, UV sterilizers are one of the best ways to control free-floating algae, allowing the pond owner to see and enjoy the fish. The UV sterilizer will also kill free-floating bacteria in the pond water.

Q. How do ultraviolet ("UV") sterilizers work?
A. UV sterilizers work by exposing water to powerful germicidal ultraviolet light. DNA and protein links in bacteria are destroyed by exposure to this light.
Q. Does the water become radioactive by this radiation?
A. No. No radiation residual or any chemical residual is left in the water as a result of the UV rays.
Q. Do these systems come in different sizes?
A. Yes. The size of the systems is directly proportional to the flow rate of the water in gallons per minute. The higher the flow rate, the larger the system and lamp.
Q. Does the water have to sit in the UV sterilizer to be disinfected?
A. No. If the system is sized correctly, the water is disinfected as it flows through.
Q. What if the water flows faster than is allowed through the system?
A. If the flow rate exceeds the design flow rate of the UV sterilizer, then there is a possibility that the water will not be properly disinfected. It is important to use a flow restrictor so that the flow rate cannot be exceeded.
Q. How long does the lamp last?
A. The lamps last approximately 10,000 hours. That is why we recommend replacement approximately every 12 - 14 months of continuous operation. After this period, the lamp itself becomes solarized and blocks the rays form entering the water.
Q. Are these systems bigger energy users?
A. No. The 12 gallon per minute model, for instance uses only 39 watts, about half the amount an ordinary light bulb uses.
Q. My water is sometimes cloudy. Is that a problem?
A. Yes. The water that enters the Ultraviolet Sterilizer must be absolutely clear and have a turbidity of less than 1 NTU. If your water is cloudy, then it must be pretreated.
